Fire Safety Town

Frisco has the coolest little place for kids and I've wanted to check it out from the first day I saw it being built. Today was our chance since our play group scheduled a tour this morning!! The schools all take field trips there so the kids will get to go eventually, and get more out of that visit than they did today, but it was fun to get a peek inside! It's called Fire Safety Town and the teach children about fire safety but they also have a small town (5/8 scale) with buildings from our community, working street lights and even a toll booth!! When the schools visit the kids are allowed to drive around in little cars (power wheels) and ride bikes through the streets and they're taught safety and traffic laws, etc. They do Trick or Treating in all the buildings for Halloween and they decorate them all with lights for Christmas (and Santa even stops by). I got the camera out about halfway through. Our first stop was a burned room. Walls, blinds, ceiling, furniture (a baby swing - that gave me chills). You could even smell it. It just showed how fire spreads - don't play with matches. I didn't take a pic in there because it was dark and Emmy wasn't a fan of that for some reason. The next room we visited was a little house area used to teach severe weather drills. We were seated in the kitchen and the windows had video screens depicting severe weather, the lights flickered and there was thunder and lightening. The TV was on "Channel 8" and Pete Delkus broke in saying there was a tornado in Frisco and that we should seek shelter immediately. After that, we went upstairs into a "kid's bedroom" that has a fog machine (that wasn't on today) showing how smokey it can get and we had to identify 2 possible exits from the room. From there we went out on the town then back inside to see the fire engine. After the kids played on that for a while we got our Jr. Fire Chief badges and the tour was over. I wish we could have seen the inside of the station next door because it looks like a really nice one with big fancy new trucks. This was all built after we moved up here so ... sometime in the last 4 years. I can't wait until the girls get to come with their schools but I don't think that's until 1st grade, at the earliest so it'll be a few years (if we still live here). Here are a few pics from today:

Riding shotgun in the fire truck.
Em climbed in all by herself!!

The lights were flashing and they thought that was so funny!

Had to check out the mini-railroad crossing!!

They even have a Babe's Chicken!
Too bad it wasn't the real thing!!

Street signs and stop lights ... it has everything just on a small scale.
It really was pretty neat. Too bad it was 100* outside.

I had been talking to Megan about the fact that we were going to visit the fire station and she was excited. They have the fire trucks for Sodor (Thomas the Tank Engine) so I told Megan we were going to see the real trucks and she smiled. I asked her at breakfast this morning what we were doing today she (my girl of few words) made her siren noise. She remembered ... and she just grinned! It was so cute I just had to share.
OH - and ROCK ON USA SOCCER!!

I LOVE Safety Town. For the 1st grade field trips, they get to drive the motorized jeeps and practice following traffic signs and stuff. So cute! I can't wait until Katie's old enough to have fun there.
