Twice in one day!

You are so lucky! A second post in one day. Unheard of!
In all the research I've done so far, I have found that the general consensus is that a child over 35-36 inches tall needs to be transitioned from their crib to a regular bed. I guess once they're 3 feet tall they are more likely to be able to climb out (or flip over the rail and land on their head). So today we decided to give it a try. We have a convertible crib and bought the toddler bed guard rail so we hooked it up. Megan was excited she could climb in and out of her very own bed. Until it was time to sleep in it. She cried and cried and gathered everything she could find to bring to her bed. She even cleaned out one of her drawers and had all her pants and shorts in bed with her. The main problem, aside from it just being different, is that the opening is where she usually sleeps. So today was the 4th day in a row, I believe, that she hasn't really taken a nap. Mommy really needs her to hold on to those naps so this madness needs to stop. Well, we started bedtime very early tonight because of the lack of a nap and so we would have time to switch her crib back if it was necessary. We tried everything but she just looked so sad and almost scared when I tried to leave the room. I couldn't even get her to lay down when I read her a story (the same one 3 times). So, instead of fight it all night long and feel like a horrible person we put her crib back together, read her another story and put her to bed. You know what? She was asleep before we made it downstairs. I know she's going to have to make the change sometime, and sooner rather than later, but she's not even 2 years old yet. She's just not ready. I did let her keep her big girl quilt with her. Baby steps toward moving to a big girl bed I suppose.

To top it off, our cleaning out closets and Megan's screaming and crying kept Emily up pretty much all day too so it was a long day at Casa Starke. Yesterday, Emily spit up in her bed and got it all over her crib bumper so I removed the bumper to wash it but didn't get it done before bedtime last night. I figured it was probably time to remove it from the crib anyways so we put her to bed without it. I woke up at 6 am to her shrieking. When I went up stairs I found that both her pacifiers had fallen through the slats out of her bed. Apparently she wanted a paci pretty badly. I changed her, popped the paci back in her mouth and put the other in her crib, and she fell right back to sleep. I think I need to buy about 15 more pacis if she's going to be attached to them like that. Needless to say, I got the bumper washed and back in the crib before bedtime tonight so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that her pacis stay in the crib and she stays content until after 7 tomorrow. I never really thought I would have one of those kids who has to give up her paci before heading off to kindergarten but apparently that's what we're headed for.

The girls were sporting their Cowboys gear today, much to James' dismay. He even had to admit they looked cute. Emily's has a star on the hip that you can't see. It also has a bib that says "COWBOYS" on it but it was covered in sweet potatoes so she didn't have it on.

Here's a pic for all of you who always said Megan was so smiley. This is what happens when she goes on a nap-strike.

what is it with preemies and their paci's. Cort was extremely attached to his also. Way more than Keaton. We had to finally take Cort's away at 3. Santa needed them for all the boys and girls around the world. So we packed them up and left them for Santa next to his cookies and soy milk. it was a hard transition, but it did work.

hmm, good to know on the bed thing. We are wondering when to try that with cass, as he is well over 35 inches tall (he was 35.5 at his 18mo check up). But he loves his crib and has never tried to crawl out. And we are hoping to avoid a toddler bed and go straight to a twin. We need the crib for baby 2 coming in March. so much to think about. And cass is almost 2 and loves his paci at naptime and bedtime. :) We are going to have a hard time getting rid of it.

Lori - Megan just quit using it when she found her fingers (that she still sucks). Emily only likes the ones that we brought home from the hospital and I think she's going to outgrow them before she wants to give them up. She won't take any other kind (another thing that ticked her off in the middle of the night when I tried to do a sneaky switch). I think we'll be sending them off with Santa too ... or sending them off to college with her!

Tracy - Megan was 35" at her 18 month appointment so we're definitely in the same boat. Congratulations on baby #2!! You had better timing ... we just had to buy a second crib!!
