More about the toddler bed ...

Just wanted to share a few things about yesterday ...

The bumper kept the pacis in Emily's crib and she was happy until about 7:45 this morning!! I might just have to put her crib down to the lowest level because she is really starting to pull up on the bumper but apparently I can't do away with that.

Back to the Toddler Bed. I did a little more research on it and found a great article, written by a pediatrician, that stated you shouldn't run out and buy your child regular/toddler bed immediately after the first time they climb out (which is what we did). It also said that any time between 18 months to 3 1/2 years is time to make the switch, ideally closer to 3. Ummm ... Megan's not even 2. First born children are usually more resistant to the switch because they want to hold on to being the baby (especially if a new sibling has recently arrived or is on the way). All of this makes sense and since Megan isn't really communicating with us yet it's hard to understand why she was so resistant. She's actually taking a nap today. I think she is so happy to have her crib put back together. They do sell mesh 'tents' that go over the top of them to keep kids in (and cats out apparently) but I'm pretty sure she would freak out if we tried that. So anyways, we're back in the crib and will be for a while. She has only climbed out (flipped over and landed on her head) once and doesn't even hike her leg up on the rail anymore. We did finally anchor all her tall furniture to the walls in case she does get out when we're not around.

Anyways, I just wanted to share that tidbit with you so you don't all think we're total pushover parents who give in at the first sign of a tear. Well, James may be ... ;-) Isn't that what dad's are for?

after Sarah fell out of her "big girl" bed and broke her collar bone, we put another twin mattress beneath her bed in case of another dismount. maybe you just put a "catch" mattress underneath in case of an escape!

Dominic got out at 21 mos in the middle of the night. I stepped on him when I went to check why the monitor was cracking! He was on the floor and I just screamed thinking he broke his neck. He NEVER made a sound and I will never know why! We were headed on a trip in 2 days without him so we had to buy the mesh net for the in-laws until we could return home. He hated it, we hated it, it seemed a bit cruel! I returned it and he got a Queen mattress put on the floor in case he fell he would not fall far and get hurt. It worked and later we put him on a bed frame with the big rails on each side which is where he is today!

That is interesting!! We switched Jack at 21 month since Cooper was coming the next month and we didn't want to buy a crib. Cooper was just switched this weekend because we set up bunk beds and the boys are ALWAYS asking to sleep together. Both transitions were great for us!!
